Preventive Dentistry: The Key to Excellent Oral Health

Nobody wants to spend any longer than necessary in a dental office. It's not just the fear of dental visits; you may also be concerned about the cost and how you'll fit unexpected dental expenses in your budget.

Interestingly enough, if you want to see less of your general dentist for major treatment, you need to see more of them for routine preventive services!

It makes sense if you think about it; you rely on the health and function of your teeth throughout your day, so it's imperative to keep them in good shape. And a dental cleaning today is always preferable to a root canal a month from now!

What Is Preventive Dental Care?

General dentistry includes all the services your family needs, and it all starts with prevention. There are three components to preventive dental care:

Comprehensive dental exams: Your teeth may feel okay, but unfortunately, that doesn't mean there isn't a problem developing that you can't yet see or feel. Exams every six months allow your dentist to monitor the health of your teeth and gums and take steps to address problems while they are still small.

Professional teeth cleanings: Brushing and flossing at home is essential, but you still need dental cleanings with a hygienist to clear away bacteria-laden plaque and tartar from your teeth. Your hygienist will also check the health of your gums and make recommendations for improved oral hygiene practices if necessary.

Conscientious oral hygiene: We can't be with you 24/7, so taking care of your teeth with proper oral hygiene at home is crucial. Be sure to brush at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, floss once, and avoid sugar and starches in your diet. All these steps will keep your teeth in good shape between visits to our Lexington dental office.
