General Dentistry

At Garden Springs Dental, we believe in preventive dentistry, which includes regular dental exams and teeth cleanings every six months. Our preventive dentistry recommendations mirror findings put forward by the American Dental Association.

We have found that patients who adopt the following habits have fewer cavities and dental emergencies, and are less likely to experience periodontal disease and tooth loss.

  • Brush at least twice per day or following meals.Close up of toothbrush with tooth paste at general dentist in Lexington KY
  • Floss at least twice per day or following meals.
  • Avoid sugary or acidic drinks and snacks.
  • Visit one of our top Lexington, KY dentists regularly.
  • Visit our skilled dental hygienist at least every six months for teeth cleanings.

Our belief in preventive dentistry—as a large part of general dentistry—stems from our Lexington, KY dentists’ goals for their patients. Dr. Davis and Dr. Edens want you to have healthy teeth for life!

But preventive dentistry isn’t simply about x-rays, dental exams, and cleaning. General dentistry is an umbrella term that covers treatments and procedures meant to keep your teeth and gums healthy.

Additionally, some general dentistry treatments and procedures fall under other umbrellas like orthodontics or dental fillings.

In other words, if it’s meant to keep your smile healthy, general dentistry covers it!

If you’re looking for general dentistry in Lexington, contact our team today at (859)-277-1189, or for convenience, you can schedule online. If you haven’t visited the dentist in a while, we’d love to see you, too, and get you on the road to life-long dental health.

We know your time is valuable, so we will take you back to meet our Lexington dentist as soon as possible. The goal of our Lexington, KY dentists is to examine your teeth and gums to make sure you don’t have an underlying dental issue.

During your appointment, our dentists will also present you with treatment options so that you may choose what works best for you and your budget.

Please feel free to ask our team and our dentists any questions along the way.

On your first visit, depending on what our dentist finds, you may have one or more of the following:

  • Teeth cleaning
  • Filling

In some cases, we schedule a follow-up appointment to treat your dental issues. The course of your visit always depends on your unique dental needs. At Garden Spring Dental, treatment plans are customized with you in mind. What works best for one patient may not be the best course for another.

Once your treatment is completed, your dentist will bring you back to our front desk to collect any co-pays or co-insurance, set up any payment plans, and set you up for our Membership Plan if desired.

We will arrange your next appointment with one of our skilled Lexington dentists at your convenience.

My exam revealed no dental issues. Why does the dentist want to see me again in six months?

The hallmark of healthy teeth is prevention through general dentistry.

Dental issues can crop up with few early symptoms, and these issues are sometimes costly and require extensive dental work—periodontal disease, for example. When you visit one of our Lexington general dentists every six months, you help prevent these types of dental issues.

Additionally, the best way to maintain healthy teeth for life is by seeing your dentist regularly.

Periodic x-rays are also important because they help Dr. Davis and Dr. Edens see subtle changes in your teeth and gum anatomy, which may signal a potential issue.

In general dentistry, it is always best to prevent a dental issue than try to reverse one later!

I wear dentures. Why do I still need to see the dentist?

If you wear dentures, our dentists still need to see you. Dentures do not prevent gum infections or periodontal disease.

Additionally, as your gums shrink over time—this is due to bone loss in the jaw—your dentures loosen and slip. Sometimes, adhesives cannot fully address this problem and you may need a denture realign.

Dentists also screen for oral cancers and are always on the lookout for subtle changes in your mouth.

Are dental x-rays safe?

At Garden Spring’s Dental, we rely on the latest technologies in diagnostics and care. This means our dental x-rays are safe. In fact, they are digital, which means clearer pictures and safer imaging for you. Additionally, our x-rays are environmentally friendly because no development chemicals are used.

In our Lexington dental office, in addition to safe x-rays, we utilize the following similar diagnostic tools:

  • Intraoral cameras. These tiny cameras allow you to see enhanced color images from inside your mouth. This helps you to better understand why our dentist has prescribed a certain therapy.
  • Panoramic x-rays. These x-rays allow our Lexington general dentists to take two-dimensional images of your teeth and jaws, including the surrounding tissue. These detailed images reduce your exposure to radiation significantly compared with traditional x-rays.
  • Cone Beam x-rays. In 2020, our office acquired a X-Mind PRIME Acteon Cone Beam X-ray machine (CBCT).  It provides the most powerful and comprehensive Cone Beam Volumetric Tomography system on the market, offering higher resolution, 360 degree rotation, and has an optimal filter for reducing metal artifacts.  These x-rays allow Dr. Davis, Dr. Edens, & Dr. Jones to capture digital images of teeth, soft and hard tissues, and nerve pathways.  With a single 360-degree pass around the head, the CBCT can capture more precise images than 2D x-rays.  Using a CBCT is an accurate way to plan implants, examine teeth with endodontic problems, as well as assist in orthodontics and sleep apnea treatment.

Why do I need a crown instead of a filling following my root canal?

When a tooth is severely damaged or an older root canal causes that tooth to fail, a traditional filling will not keep that tooth strong and viable.

In fact, the tooth can break and cause infection and bring further tooth loss down the road.

At Garden Springs Dental, we want to prevent this all-too-common occurrence.

A dental crown is a restoration that goes over your natural tooth. It matches your surrounding teeth in shade and shape, and it helps prevent your damaged tooth from breaking. With a dental crown, you can resume smiling and chewing your favorite foods.

Why do I need an extraction?

No one likes to think about having a tooth pulled. But sometimes a dental extraction in our top Lexington dental office is the best course.

An extraction can help prepare your mouth for cosmetic dental treatments. Also, you may need dental extractions for problematic wisdom teeth, which often come in partially or encroach on other teeth. Wisdom teeth serve no purpose, but they do have the potential to cause dental problems and pain.

If a tooth is damaged beyond repair and jeopardizing your oral health, we may recommend a dental extraction. For Dr. Davis and Dr. Edens, this is always a last resort.

Happy couple smiling near our Lexington KY dentist officeIf I brush and floss regularly, why do I need a teeth cleaning every six months?

According to the American Dental Association and our own experience with patients, we know that dental cleanings go a long way toward helping you keep your teeth for life.

Even if you brush and floss regularly, your toothbrush and floss cannot reach every nook. Also, stubborn bacteria and tarter—often at or below the gumline—requires a professional dental cleaning.

Our Lexington Hygienist uses the latest dental tools and technologies to clear away harmful bacteria that can lead to periodontal disease, cavities, and dental emergencies.

I brush and floss but still get cavities. What am I doing wrong?

A thorough dental cleaning in our Lexington dental office may be the best answer. A dental cleaning removes the bacteria that causes dental infections. Also, our hygienist may recommend dental cleanings more often if you’re still getting cavities with six month cleanings.

In the meantime, make sure you’re not skipping flossing or brushing at home. Additionally, if you’re indulging in sugary drinks and snacks, cut back!

How does your Dental Membership plan work?

Our dentists, Dr. Davis, Dr. Edens & Dr. Jones, care about your oral health. This is why we offer a Dental Membership plan. This is for patients who do not have dental insurance and are looking for a way to save money while taking care of their dental health.  Patients may join our Membership Plan at any time during the year.  For a limited time, patients can join the Plan for a one time annual fee of $29.  Once a patient has joined the Plan, they will enjoy 15% off all treatment received in our office (discount does not apply to any retail products we sell, as we already sell these products at our cost).  At Garden Springs Dental, our Lexington team wants you have the best general dentistry care possible, and we strive to make this feasibleand less expensive.
