Common Emergency Questions

Dental emergencies happen. Broken teeth, chipped crowns, and aching mouths are all part of life. When they happen to you, we’re here to help with immediate attention.

If you or a family member have a dental emergency, please refer to these common questions for help or call our office!

How Do I Know if My Problem Constitutes as a Dental Emergency?

Our goal at Garden Springs Dental is to be there for your emergency and provide the relief you need. What we don’t want is for you to spend time wondering whether your problem constitutes an emergency and whether or not you should call us.

Always call us first, regardless of the problem you are experiencing. If it’s a concern to you, it’s a concern to us, and we want to hear about it. Whether you chip off a piece of a tooth or feel a twinge of pain, please let us know immediately. Call our Lexington dental office, and we’ll listen to your concerns and get you on our schedule as soon as possible.

I Knocked Out My Tooth! How Can You Help Me?

If a tooth has been knocked out, it’s essential that you call us right away. A delay can often make the difference between saving and losing the tooth. Handle the tooth carefully, taking care not to disturb the root. It’s crucial to keep the tooth root moist until you can see us, so place it carefully in milk, water, or even saliva.

Please note that if a knocked-out tooth includes injury to your face or jaw, or you experience excessive bleeding, you should call 911 or head to the nearest emergency room.

I Have a Mild Toothache. Should I Make an Emergency Dental Appointment?

When you have an emergency, it’s essential not to ignore it. Even a mild toothache can quickly turn into severe pain if we don’t treat it soon enough.

We’ll make an appointment to see you so we can take a look at the tooth and see what’s going on. Our dentists will most likely recommend an x-ray so they can see inside your tooth to get a full picture of what’s happening and what the best approach is for treatment.

Is a Lost Filling a Dental Emergency?

Fillings and crowns can last for many years, but an older restoration can become loose and dislodge from the tooth. If a filling or crown is lost, please save the crown or filling pieces and bring them with you to your emergency dental appointment.

In most cases, a lost tooth filling is not usually painful, but we do need to address the problem as soon as possible. Without a filling to support it, the tooth is weakened and susceptible to breakage. We also need to create a new filling to seal the tooth from bacteria that could damage your oral health.

Call Garden Springs Dental at (859) 277-1189, and we’ll get you on our schedule as soon as possible.

Should I Make an Emergency Appointment for a Lost Dental Crown?

Losing a crown is a dental emergency that can be upsetting because your tooth is no longer protected. The first thing to do is call our dental office so we can schedule an appointment.

If possible, try to replace the dental crown on the tooth to protect it. If that doesn’t work, wrap the dental crown in tissue and bring it with you to your appointment.

We can often re-cement a dental crown back in place if the tooth has not suffered any further damage. Our dentists will check your tooth, clean it thoroughly, and bond the dental crown to it.

Sometimes a dental crown falls off because of underlying tooth decay. If this is the case, we need to fill the cavity, and because of this, it may not be possible to reuse the crown.

How Can I Tell if I Need an Emergency Root Canal?

In most cases, no one needs to tell you that you need an emergency root canal. An infected root canal can be so painful that your first and only priority is to get relief immediately.

Once you’re in pain, the infection has already penetrated the interior of your tooth. If we don’t remove the infection, the pain will continue, and we will eventually need to extract the tooth.

But pain isn’t always a reliable indication because some root canal infections are not painful. Look for these other symptoms that indicate you might need an emergency root canal:

Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures

  • A raised bump or “pimple” on your gums
  • Swollen or tender gums
  • Discoloration of a tooth
  • Extreme sensitivity to touch

If you’re in pain or notice any of the other symptoms, please call our office to arrange an emergency appointment.

Do You See Patients for an Emergency Tooth Extraction?

We always view tooth extraction as a last resort. But in some cases, removing a tooth is the only option available to us to protect your overall oral health.

If you need an emergency tooth extraction in Lexington, KY, please call Garden Springs Dental, and we’ll provide the gentle and compassionate care you need. Your comfort is our priority, so if you need help relaxing during your procedure, ask us about nitrous oxide, a short-term sedation option.
