Early Dental Care Is Essential for Your Child
We like to see kids starting around age three, and many parents are curious about why we recommend visits at such a young age.
First, we want to see kids before problems develop. Dental cleanings and exams for children at our Lexington, KY dental office are just as crucial for them as they are for you. We stress prevention for adults, and it’s even more critical for children. In most cases, kids start with healthy teeth, and we want to keep them that way.
If your toddler is ready for their first dental appointment, or your older child is due for a checkup, please call Garden Springs Dental to schedule. We can’t wait to welcome your little one to our dental family!
Baby Teeth and the Important Role They Play
It’s easy to underestimate the importance of baby teeth. Your child will lose them eventually, so you may be confused about why it's so important to care for them.
Healthy baby teeth act as placeholders for permanent teeth that are getting ready to erupt. If your son or daughter loses a baby tooth too soon due to decay, neighboring baby teeth start to drift into the open space.
This movement often leads to crooked teeth because when the permanent tooth is ready to emerge, it has no place to go. For this reason, the tooth can come in at an odd or tilted angle that will eventually require orthodontics to correct.
Seeing your children’s dentist in Lexington, KY starting at an early age ensures that baby teeth remain healthy until they are ready to come out on their own. Please call us to schedule a dental appointment for your son or daughter.
We Encourage Fun Dental Visits for Your Child
We want to do everything possible to support your child in discovering the benefits of healthy teeth. The goal of your child’s first visits is to gradually introduce them to the sights and sounds of a dental office. We’ll count their teeth and give them a fun ride in the dental chair.
When their appointment is over, they get a balloon and a toy from our treasure chest.
When your son or daughter gets a little older, we will introduce them to our No Cavity Club. Each time your child has a visit with no cavities, we take their picture with a sign that says, "No Cavity Club."
We then send the picture to your phone, so you can share it on social media and brag to family and friends. If you like, you can sign a media release right on our app for this picture so we can put it on our Facebook page as well!
If your child is nervous about their dental visit, please let us know, and we'll do whatever it takes to help calm their fears. By the time your child has their first x-rays at the age of six or seven, he or she should feel quite at ease in the dental chair.
What Preventive Dentistry for Children Involves
Preventive dentistry for children includes exams and teeth cleanings twice a year at our Lexington, KY dental office. If your child isn’t experiencing any dental problems, we want to keep it that way. If our dentists do find something, they can address it right away. Early treatment spares your child the discomfort of a toothache and saves you money on their dental treatment over the long term.
We also often recommend dental sealants for children to keep their teeth strong and healthy. A thin coating of plastic material painted on the chewing surfaces of teeth that have rough or uneven surfaces, such as molars.
Our dentists apply the sealants to healthy teeth with no previous dental work. The coating acts as a barrier between the surfaces of the tooth and bacteria and food debris that can collect on them and cause cavities.
During your child’s routine dental exams, we’ll check the condition of the sealants to make sure there are no chips. Sealants gradually wear away on their own and need to be replaced periodically to protect your child’s teeth.
Fluoride is a mineral found in bones, teeth, and our environment in soil, water, air, and plants. Since fluoride helps strengthen dental enamel, you will also find it in mouthwashes, toothpaste, and rinses. Fluoride benefits your child's oral health in several ways:
- Reverses early tooth decay
- Remineralilzes weakened tooth enamel
- Slows the loss of minerals from dental enamel
- Prevents the growth of harmful bacteria in the mouth
If your child drinks plenty of tap water, they may already be getting sufficient fluoride. However, if our dentists determine that your child can benefit, they will recommend a supplemental application of fluoride.
Tips to Help Your Child Cope with Dental Anxiety
Do you have a lifelong fear of dentistry that started in childhood? Some adults can trace their anxiety back to their very first experience with a dentist.
It’s such a burden to carry this kind of anxiety because it prevents you from maintaining dental appointments that benefit your oral health. Our philosophy at Garden Springs Dental is that no child ever needs to fear a dentist again.
We’ll do our part to make sure that your child’s appointments are comfortable and stress-free. But there are several things you can do to help your child have a positive experience the first time and every time after that.
- Start early – Before we “officially” see your child, bring them in with you or a sibling for your dental visits. There are no expectations and no stress, so your child can get comfortable with us at their own pace.
- Keep negativity to yourself – You know that kids are like little sponges that pick up everything you say, even when you think they’re not listening. If you don't have positive feelings about dentistry, keep it to yourself.
- Speak positively about dentistry – Never, ever use words like “hurt,” “pain,” or “shot.” Sticking with phrases like "sugar bugs" or "happy teeth” helps put a positive spin on the experience.
- Don’t use bribes or rewards – If you reward your child after visiting the dentist, they may get a sense that it's something that must be endured. Work with your children's dentist and follow some of these tips, and it won't be necessary to bribe them to get into the dental chair.
